Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the non-stop energy of Hanoi, I hop on a bus and head south. My destination? Trang An Ninh Binh. It’s my "happy place" in Vietnam. If you're looking for a destination that looks like it belongs in a fairytale (or a blockbuster movie), this is it. I’ve visited several times, and the magic of those limestone mountains never fails to ground me.

A Different Kind of Adventure
The boat tours at Trang An are famous for a reason. You sit in a small wooden boat, and a local rower—usually a woman with incredible strength—guides you through a labyrinth of mountains and water. It costs 250,000 VND, which is about $10, and for a 3-hour journey through a UNESCO World Heritage site, it's an absolute bargain. I always recommend arriving early, around 8:00 AM, to beat the heat and the large tour groups that come in from Hanoi.

Through the Heart of the Mountain
The caves here are the real stars. Some are so low that everyone in the boat has to duck down. Inside, the ceiling is covered in natural sculptures of stone, and the water is so clear you can see the river grass waving below. I personally love Route 3 because of the Dot Cave—it's incredibly long and feels like a journey into another world. Along the way, you'll stop at beautiful temples like Trinh Temple, where you can stretch your legs and soak in the history.

Don't Miss the Mua Caves Climb!
After your boat tour, grab a quick lunch and head over to Mua Caves. It’s not really a cave but a steep climb to a stunning viewpoint. Yes, there are about 500 stairs, and yes, you will be sweaty! But the view of the valley is like nothing else in the world. It’s the perfect spot for photos, and there’s even a giant stone dragon watching over the valley from the top. It's one of the best things to do in Ninh Binh, hands down.

Dinner Specialties
Before you head back, you have to try the local burnt rice (cơm cháy) and goat meat. I was skeptical at first, but the crispy rice with savory sauce is addictive! Ninh Binh is famous for its goat dishes, and you can find them at almost any local restaurant in the area. It’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring. If you want a more luxurious experience, Tam Coc Garden Resort is a beautiful place to dine or stay.

Trang An is a place of peace, history, and incredible natural beauty. If you're coming to Vietnam, make sure this is on your list. You won't regret it!
