My Insane Hue Food Diary

Hey fellow travelers! If you know me, you know I base 90% of my travel plans around my stomach. During my recent trip to Hue, the ancient royal capital, my only goal was tracking down the real Hue best food.

Because of its imperial heritage, recipes have passed from royal chefs straight down to incredible street food aunties! I allocated a very generous budget of $50 (about 1.25 mil VND), and honestly? I completely failed at spending it. Total spent was roughly $15! Grab your notebook; here’s the perfect budget itinerary if you want to eat like absolute royalty!

Start at 8 AM: Fire up with Bún Bò Huế 🍜

It's not a real morning unless you're sweating over soup. I trekked to Bún Bò Mệ Kéo at 20 Bạch Đằng. Please go before 10 AM, guys! As a true breakfast-only gem, they shut down immediately when the Bún Bò Huế runs dry.

Bún Bò Mệ Kéo

For just 40,000 VND ($1.60!), this isn’t your polite bowl of northern pho. This is aggressively delicious authentic Hue cuisine. Expect fatty beef, tender noodles, and wild ingredients like a savory cube of congealed pig's blood (think meaty firm tofu — do not skip it, be brave!). The lemongrass and shrimp paste aromatics had me wide awake instantly.

10 AM Fix: You NEED to try Salt Coffee ☕

Before Instagram existed, locals were whipping up genius Cà Phê Muối (Salt Coffee) here. I headed to the literal birthplace of the trend: 10 Nguyễn Lương Bằng.

Salt Coffee

If you love salted caramel, this must try food in Hue will change your life. A dark Robusta drip dances into a rich, salty milk foam. Stir, pour over ice, and ascend to heaven. Just 25k VND ($1.00) makes me cry happy tears. Hue food prices are magic!

1 PM: Sampling the Imperial Dumplings (The "Bánh" Fest) 🥟

At lunchtime, it’s Quán Hạnh (11 Phó Đức Chính) for an edible history lesson of Hue ancient capital food. The royals demanded beautiful snack-sized platters. I did the "thập cẩm" combo platter ($6) and went to town!

Platter of Hue Banh

The spread: The small rice disks called Bánh Bèo. Bánh Nậm flat leaf tamales. Bánh Lọc chewy clear tapioca dumplings. A crazy-crispy pancake called Bánh Khoái. Oh, and interactive DIY Nem Lụi rolls! Best. Activity. Ever.

4 PM Snack: The Iconic Alley Dessert 🍧

Vietnam runs on Chè—and Vietnamese sweet soups find their crown here. Pop by Chè Hẻm ("Alley Dessert") at 1 Kiệt 29 Hùng Vương on any self-guided Hue street food tour. Just 15k VND!

Che dessert Hue

Ask for Chè Thập Cẩm. You’ll be holding a vibrant glass of tapioca jewels, soft taro, icy crunch, and coconut cream that cures the humidity.

7 PM Dinner: Roll your own Smoky BBQ 🌿🍖

We’re out of the center and into Grab territory for dinner! Just Grab a bike and navigate to 52/1 Kim Long for Bún Thịt Nướng Huyền Anh.

Bun Thit Nuong

Snag a combo of peanutty-pork noodle perfection (Bún Thịt Nướng) and the standalone pork lemongrass skewers (Nem Lụi) for $4.80. Getting your hands messy wrapping fragrant charcoal-fired meat in rice paper is the highlight of the night.

9 PM Late Cravings: Funky Clam Rice Madness! 🦪

I wasn’t quitting yet. Down to the legendary alleys at Cơm Hến Hoa Đông at 64 Kiệt 7 Ưng Bình.

Com Hen Clam rice

I scored Cơm Hến (Baby Clam Rice) (mined right off the Perfume River). For a literal 80 cents, they drop a bowl stacked with crunchy rinds, cold rice, baby clams, and mind-numbingly intense fermented shrimp paste on you. So wonderfully chaotic!

All in for under 15 bucks. And you know where my unspent $35 went? Sunset beers on a scenic rooftop bar overlooking the water. Book your flight and eat everything, people. Stay hungry! 🥂
