My Perfect 3-Day Ho Chi Minh City Itinerary (For First-Timers!)

Hey everyone! Grab yourself a cup of coffee (or better yet, a strong Vietnamese iced coffee) because today we are talking about one of my favorite cities in the world: Ho Chi Minh City! If you've never been to Saigon before, planning an itinerary can feel super overwhelming. The traffic is crazy, there is so much to see, and the heat is real.

I’m sharing the exact itinerary I give to all my friends when they visit. It isn't a stressful, minute-by-minute checklist. It’s a relaxed, realistic plan that lets you see the best spots while actually having time to soak in the incredible vibe of the city.

Beautiful Ho Chi Minh City

Why 3 Days is the Magic Number

A lot of people ask if they can just do a one-day trip to Saigon before heading to the beach. My honest answer? Please don't! One day just leaves you sweaty and stressed.

Three days is the absolute sweet spot. It gives you time to explore the city's gorgeous French architecture, take a half-day trip out of town, and spend a whole day just eating your way through the streets. If you happen to have a 4 or 5 day stay, don't pack it with more sights—just sleep in and take things slower!

Day 1: Ease In and Explore the History

You just got off a flight, so today is not the day to be a hero. Keep your plans central and walkable. District 1 is perfect for this.

War Remnants Museum

My biggest tip: do the heavy war history stuff today. Head to the Independence Palace and the War Remnants Museum while your mind is still fresh. These spots are incredibly moving, and you want to give them your full attention. (For ticket prices and hours, check out this great guide to HCMC attractions).

For the evening, just go with the flow. If you are jet-lagged, grab some local food and go to sleep. If you are feeling energetic, wander around and see the city light up!

Day 2: The Cu Chi Tunnels

Day two is for getting out of the city! I always send my friends to the Cu Chi Tunnels. Even if you aren't a huge history nerd, crawling through the tunnels is an experience you will never forget.

Day trip to Cu Chi

I highly recommend booking a morning tour to the tunnels. It takes up a chunk of the day, but going in the morning means you beat the worst of the heat and get back to Saigon by early afternoon. Use the rest of your day to chill in one of Saigon's amazing hidden cafes.

Day 3: Food, Markets, and Sunset Views

Your last day is all about the vibes. No more museums! Today is the reason people fall in love with Vietnam: the food.

Delicious street food

Start with a real street food breakfast sitting on those iconic tiny plastic stools. If you aren't sure what to eat, this street food guide is a lifesaver. Spend your afternoon wandering through some local markets (skip the touristy ones for real shopping!), and cap off your trip with a lovely dinner cruise on the Saigon River.

A Few Extra Tips!

Please don't over-schedule! It gets super hot in the middle of the day. Plan your outdoor walking for the mornings and late afternoons, and use midday to sit in air-conditioning.

Crazy traffic in Ho Chi Minh City

If you are traveling with kids, make sure to add in plenty of pool time to break up the history tours. And if you are visiting during the rainy season, don't worry! It usually just downpours for an hour in the afternoon and then clears up perfectly.

Have the best time in Saigon! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions before you go!
